MY
FAMILY
AT WAR
A guided museum tour with a personal touch. We will explore the Museum of Military History through the eyes of my great grandfathers and gain insight into how the First World War affected their lives.
I was lucky to know my great grandfather, Rudolf Till, and spend time with him as a child. Many years after his death I found a newspaper article he wrote about his last battle of the first World War. The old man I loved so much appeared in a new light to me. The distant historic events of a long gone era suddenly appeared more real and palpable. I was intrigued and wanted to know more.
There are no particular heroic stories in my family but this is exactly what I wanted to focus on on this tour, the individual experiences and what it meant to endure the horrors of war at the front and at home. The research brought me closer to a man I admired and loved as a young child and let me see the historic events from the perspective of my family.
But the first World War would not be the last for my family, so we will carry on to explore the troubled time of the first Republic and its obliteration by the Nazi regime. My grandmothers witnessed the “Anschluss” as young Girls and saw the city crumble by air raids and fighting with the red army. They had to fear for their fathers lives, fighting in a fanatic war wile dealing with puberty and school at home.
